White House Introduces Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness

On June 4, First Lady Michelle Obama, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced the creation of the Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness during an event at the White House. The challenge is part of the ongoing White House initiative Joining Forces. Participating state and local officials committed to ending veterans homelessness in their communities by 2015 using the power of federal, local, and non-profit resources.

A HUD press release details some of the federal resources and recommendations available to local homeless programs. These include adopting a Housing First approach, coordinating outreach efforts, and providing preventive services to at-risk veterans.

An accompanying post to HUD’s online blog, “The Huddle,” examines the challenge’s goal. While veteran homelessness has been reduced by 24 percent since 2010, the number of veterans sleeping on the streets remains “simply unacceptable.”
