HUD Publishes Proposed Rule on Smoke-Free Public Housing

Today in the Federal Register, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) published a proposed rule that would require all PHAs to ban smoking of lit tobacco products in living units, indoor common areas, and administrative offices. The proposed rule was previously announced in a press release, which explained that PHAs would have 18 months from the effective date of the final rule to implement smoke-free policies applicable to all indoor areas and to outdoor areas within 25 feet of buildings. HUD has also posted a four-page question-and-answer document about the proposed rule.

If you wish to submit comments on today’s proposed rule, you will find instructions following the “Addresses” heading in the preamble. Comments are due by January 19, 2016.
